WHAT IS FREENESS

WHY & WHO

“There’s a huge amount of new music created and produced outside the confines of the commercial music industry and we wanted to do something to support and bring attention to what is going on outside the mainstream.

We’re particularly interested in celebrating black and Asian music makers and people in minorities who are producing creative work. We want to open up and look beyond what the music industry calls ‘urban music’ – we’re interested in music that’s fresh and new, especially the stuff that doesn’t fit into an easy mainstream box”
ICEBOX

THE 2005 TOUR AND CD

In 2005 Freeness put out a call for new music aimed at modern producers and musical innovators.

We held open submission nights in ten major cities in England, and invited musicians to come and air their new ideas, unreleased or unpublished songs, work in progress, remixes, edits…

Reaching out to those whose work is created on laptops, in bedroom studios and sampling sequencers, Freeness helped get the raw energy and diversity of grass roots music production out of isolation, into the open and shared with an audience. Check the tour diary for info and pictures.

Freeness Volume 1 is a double CD compilation featuring a selection of tracks submitted on the tour.

Freeness 2005 was an ICEBOX project in collaboration with CDR and Blacktronica.

2006 AND BEYOND

Freeness was only initially intended to be a one year project, but it was so successful we’re going to keep going. Right now we’re busy behind the scenes securing the funding and sponsorship we need to do more touring, connect with more artists and produce another CD.
The website will grow, we’ll be streaming new tracks and we’ll be embarking on new projects and partnerships so keep checking the website, sign up for the newsletter and get in touch if you’ve got something to share.

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY

Our aim is not to sign new talent or make any financial gain from either the musicians involved or the product created, but to give our unsung heroes of musical creativity a chance to be heard outside the boundaries often placed upon creative, culturally diverse music makers.
